That’s why we created the Shield of Hope program. This new community initiative provides free roof replacements to our neighbors in need.
Shield of Hope helps people who can’t afford, manage, or access the resources needed for a roof replacement on their own. After serving Seattle for nearly thirty years, we have a chance to give back to the community that has helped us so much.
We were honored to complete our first Shield of Hope project this summer for a man who embodies resilience and humility.
Meeting Bhaskar
When one of the residents in a four-unit townhouse building contacted us about a roof leak, our team expected a routine inspection. What we found was far more urgent: a roof in severe disrepair, long past its lifespan and leaking in multiple areas.
As we spoke with each resident, we met Bhaskar Srinivasan.
Bhaskar immigrated from India and has proudly called Seattle home since 1998. He became a homeowner in 2002 and has worked hard to maintain his home and community ties. But like many in our neighborhoods, life threw unexpected challenges his way.
In recent years, Bhaskar has faced serious health issues, which brought heavy financial strain. When we explained the situation with the failing roof, Bhaskar shared that he simply couldn’t afford his portion of the replacement cost.
Despite the challenges he’s enduring, Bhaskar radiated warmth, gratitude, and resilience. Our team felt deeply moved by his story, and we instantly knew that Bhaskar was the exact person for whom Shield of Hope was created.
Rebuilding the Roof
Led by one of our expert project managers, Vance Valin, our crew began the extensive replacement. During the initial inspection, we discovered an unexpected complication in the attic: a gypsum fireboard had been installed beneath the roof sheathing.
While a fireboard is effective for fire resistance, it’s not designed to serve as a structural roof deck. Over time, it can trap moisture, weaken, and compromise the integrity of the roofing system. Because of this, we couldn’t simply repair the existing roof deck.
Instead of cutting corners, our team fully re-sheeted the structure with proper materials to ensure long-lasting integrity. We also replaced an outdated dryer vent with new solid ducting to improve home safety and ventilation.
